Why You Should Listen
Getting reliable information about nutrition and personal health is incredibly difficult these days. Between the constant conflicting studies and ever-changing diet trends, deciphering the best way to eat for your personal health can seem like a never ending puzzle. On this show, we’re focused on answering the question of how we can nourish ourselves without starving the planet – but the question remains, how can we do that when most people don’t even know the basics of nourishing themselves?
In this episode, I set out to put some of the confusion to rest with the help of Dr. Michelle McMacken. It may come as a surprise to some, but most internal medicine doctors today aren’t formally trained in nutrition, this is something that McMacken hopes to fix through the evidence-based nutrition curriculum she received a grant to create for her colleagues.
In her practice, McMacken is an advocate for plant-based nutrition and has helped transform the lives of many of her patients by focusing on their food choices and guiding them to improve their overall well-being through healthy eating and lifestyle modifications. While she may be vegan herself, she is careful to guide her patients to think more along the lines of “health-promoting” and “harmful” foods to meet them where they are and help them steer their own health journey through food.
This conversation touches on a variety of issues like how to cut through the health hype and determine how you can use food to obtain your optimum health. She covers whether or not counting calories or tracking your protein is really necessary, if saturated fat is something you need to avoid, and shares stories of patients that were able to reduce or eliminate their reliance on medication thanks to simple diet changes.
Dr. McMacken has made it her life’s mission to help people stay healthy and live their very best lives. If you want to learn more about how you can start living yours – listen in!
